Details
In the pastel The Star (French: L'Étoile), we see a lone ballerina on the stage, illuminated brilliantly by the stage lighting. She stands en pointe, gracefully balanced on one leg, and takes a majestic pose.
About the Artist
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist renowned for his pastel drawings and oil paintings of ballerinas. Degas also created bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is particularly associated with the subject of dance, with more than half of his works depicting dancers. Although Degas is considered one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring instead to be called a realist.
